Viagra Info for Heart Disease Patients (and other Disease Sufferers)
The matter of existing heart conditions and the use of Viagra is a very serious one. In documentation that describes various medical indications pertaining to this drug there is a serious warning about this issue. There are also other health risks besides heart disease.
The Risk
Men who have a preexisting cardiovascular disease are at a higher risk for having another heart attack while having sex. Often in this case it is not advised that a man has sexual intercourse and/or participates in very vigorous sexual activity.
Most of the time in a case like this Viagra is not prescription. There are very few exceptions to this. It highly depends upon the severity of the risk though.
This is one reason why you need to be honest with your doctor. He or she may ask if you have had a heart attack recently, say within the past six months to a year.
Perhaps there is a chance that a cardiovascular condition can be corrected. However, in the event it is way beyond reversible you may not be able to do anything about it any more.
The following are more specific guidelines pertaining to the determination whether a Viagra user is at higher risk before taking this medication (and some refer to cases other than just heart disease):
- If a man has had a heart attack or any other type of life-threatening arrhythmic heart failure and/or stroke within the past six months he is at high risk.
- Patients with hypotension (low blood pressure) levels of less than 90/50 or hypertension (high blood pressure) of 170/110 should be very concerned. They generally are not given Viagra.
- If a man has a serious eye disorder such as retinitis pegmentosa or retinal phosphodiesterases he should not take this particular ED drug. It could put threaten a man’s life or at the very least complicate matters.
- A man who suffers painful erections for longer than six hours and/or prolonged erections for longer than four hours should call for medical help immediately. They are advised to discontinue the ED drug. Not that permanent penile tissue damage could result from a prolonged or painful erection.
- A man who is taking alpha blockers for high blood pressure may be monitored very carefully. He would most likely be put on a lower dosage of Viagra.
There are many variables as to whether a man should be sexually active if he has cardiovascular problems. There are also variables as to whether he should be involved in sexual activity when experiencing other serious health problems such as stroke or severe eye disorder.
